Conversations about diversity are never easy. Who is working through clay right now? Where is the world in ceramics programs in the USA?
As we enter the fourth, possibly fifth generation removed from the Mingei Movement’s sweeping changes of Western ceramics in the1950s, where is a visible impact of broader global traditions in ceramics in USA? Where are intersections between indigenous traditions—such American Indian traditions right here in the USA—with ceramics programs graduating thousands of BFA and MFAs each year? What needs to shift for ceramics in the USA to expand beyond a fetishization of China, Japan, Korea and Modernism?
